Raamt - Spirit of the Woods by Patriartis Raamt - Spirit of the Woods by Patriartis
"I'm serious Karl, it's bad enough we stole from the Larson widow, now you want us to spend the night here, in this cottage? I told you before, I told you on our last job for Christ's sake, this place isn't abandoned, we can't just spend the night here like it's some random barn on a field!". The man sounded almost desperate. "Relax Tor, look over at that stall. Ain't no cows there. Ain't nothing in the hen house either; and ain't sure as hell nothing in the outhouse. Even if someone still calls this place home, they're calling it home from some place far away. Ain't no one nearby, nor ain't any one coming, not tonight." Almost startled by Karl's newfound ignorance, Tor replied: "You fool, do you think I give a donkey's ass about the owners? I know where they are, I even know they're penny-pinching dimwits, and they won't be back for weeks. C'mon, you know what happens..." Karl, tired and impatient, grunted: "What, what? What happens?"

Tor's sudden, furious gaze pierced Karl's tired eyes... a gaze so intense, you could hardly notice his lips move: "Don't make me call it by name".

In a really small town not far from here, there's an old folk tale, a story of a being that lives in the dense woods nearby. Some say it's a being, flesh and bone, others say it's a shadow, a spirit, almost a perception. Children have been held in check by stories of this 'thing' for hundreds of years in these parts. Supposedly it snatches people who are somewhere they shouldn't be. They call it Raamt. Noone knows how old Raamt is, but in the old Norse language, there's the word "raamr" which means something like "a hand with extending fingers".

How about you, got any similar local stuff where you guys come from?

Oh it sounds a lot like a Wendigo.  Very cool!  Love the painting too!  The closest thing I have in my area in the Jersey Devil.  I have painted renditions of both of them with a links and a description of the creatures in the artist's comments if you've never heard of them and are curious. :)

This is an excellent character concept!  Ever heard the legend of the Wendigo?  From Algonquian Folklore.  A cannibal monster or evil spirit native to my neck of the woods, the Great Lakes and Canada.  I honestly believe that, although our 'modern' world is ever encroaching on the forests of the world, there are still things that remain mysterious and unexplained.  There is knowledge in folk lore that was useful to know once upon a time.  Try camping alone on the north shore of the Great Lake Gitche Gumee some time!

Thanks a lot! Ah yes, I've heard of the Wendigo, though for some reason I think I confused it with a 'monster' in the southern parts of North America. Oh well. I agree though, there has been much lost over the centuries, and although most of it is probably the result of overactive imaginations, I'm positive there are things out there that we, as the most 'capable' beings on earth, can't explain at the moment.
